BOPP is a glossy plastic film tape that sticks on contact, costs less per foot, works in any tape gun and prints crisply. Water-activated tape is kraft paper with a starch adhesive you wet before use; it recycles with the box and is tamper-evident, but it needs a dispenser, costs more and only bonds to cardboard. Pick BOPP for speed, cost and a glossy printed look on any package. Pick paper if curbside recyclability is central to your brand story. Parcelry makes BOPP tape, and this guide says so plainly.
What each one is
BOPP tape
BOPP is biaxially oriented polypropylene: a thin polypropylene film stretched in two directions, which is what gives it tensile strength out of proportion to its thickness. A standard roll is about 2 mil (50 microns) thick in total, roughly 30 microns of film and 20 of adhesive. The adhesive is pressure-sensitive, so the tape bonds the moment you press it down. It is the clear or tan tape on most of the boxes that arrive at your door.
Water-activated tape
Water-activated tape, often called WAT, kraft tape or gummed tape, is a strip of kraft paper coated with a dry starch-based adhesive. You run it through a dispenser that wets the adhesive, then press it onto the box. The water carries the adhesive into the paper fibers of the corrugated board, so once it dries the tape and the box are effectively one piece. Reinforced versions have fiberglass threads laminated inside for heavy cartons.
Side by side
| BOPP (glossy film) | Water-activated kraft paper | |
|---|---|---|
| Material | Polypropylene film, #5 plastic | Kraft paper, sometimes with fiberglass reinforcement |
| Adhesive | Pressure-sensitive acrylic or hot-melt | Starch-based, activated with water |
| How you apply it | Pull, press, cut. Any hand tape gun. | Through a wetting dispenser, manual or electric, $30 to $300+ |
| Speed | Fast. One hand, one motion. | Slower. Measure, feed, wet, apply, hold a moment. |
| Surfaces | Cardboard, poly mailers, glossy or coated boxes, plastic | Uncoated corrugated cardboard only |
| Tamper evidence | Low. Can be lifted and reapplied if done carefully. | High. Removing it tears the box surface. |
| Printed look | Glossy, sharp, solid colors on clear, white or colored film | Matte, soft, ink sits on textured kraft |
| Cost per foot, custom printed | About 5¢ to 10¢ at small quantities | About 9¢ to 11¢ at small quantities |
| Recyclability | Not curbside. Peel off before recycling the box, or leave on; mills screen it out. | Recycles and composts with the box |
| Shelf life | Years with acrylic adhesive; hot-melt yellows in 1 to 2 years | Years if kept dry; humidity can pre-activate it |
| Weak point | It is plastic. No eco claim to make. | Needs water on the bench; fails on coated boxes and mailers. |
When BOPP is the right call
- You ship from a kitchen table, a spare room or a small studio. No dispenser to fill, nothing to spill on inventory, one motion per strip.
- You ship more than one kind of package. BOPP sticks to poly mailers, padded mailers and glossy printed boxes. Paper tape does not.
- You want a sharp, glossy brand mark. Ink on film prints solid and bright. Ink on kraft prints soft and earthy, which is a look, but not every logo suits it.
- Cost per box matters. Printed BOPP works out at roughly 25 to 48 cents a box at small quantities. Paper runs higher per foot and the dispenser is extra. The cost guide has the numbers.
When paper is the right call
- Recyclability is part of what you sell. If your customers chose you for low-waste packaging, a strip of plastic on a compostable box undercuts the story. Paper tape closes that gap.
- You ship high-value goods and want tamper evidence. Water-activated tape bonds into the fibers; it cannot be lifted and reapplied without leaving a mark.
- You ship only uncoated corrugated boxes from a fixed packing bench. The dispenser earns its space when it is used all day.
Brands like noissue and Sticker Mule specialize in custom water-activated paper tape, and they do it well. If paper is your answer, they are the right place to look, not us.
What the spec sheet words mean
2 mil
Total thickness, film plus adhesive, in thousandths of an inch. 2 mil (about 50 microns) is the industrial-grade standard; 1.6 mil is economy tape that splits in the gun; 2.6 mil and up is heavy-duty for cartons over about 40 lb. For e-commerce boxes, 2 mil is the right spec.
Acrylic vs hot-melt adhesive
Hot-melt adhesive is cheaper and grabs faster, but it yellows, goes brittle and loses tack within a year or two, especially in heat. Acrylic adhesive is slightly slower to grab, stays clear for years and holds up in heat and cold. For tape that carries your brand and may sit in a closet for months between orders, acrylic is the one to insist on. Parcelry uses a water-based acrylic adhesive.
Protected print, also called reverse or sub-surface print
There are two ways to print on BOPP. Surface printing puts the ink on the outside of the film, where it scuffs against other boxes in a truck. Protected printing puts the ink on the inside face of the film and applies the adhesive over it, so the ink is sealed between film and glue and cannot rub off. It is the difference between a logo that looks good leaving your door and one that looks good arriving. Parcelry prints protected.
3-inch core
The cardboard tube in the middle. 3 inches is the US standard and fits every tape gun and hand dispenser sold here. Some imported tape comes on smaller cores that only fit their own dispensers.
The honest note on plastic
BOPP is plastic, and Parcelry does not dress that up. The box itself is where the environmental weight sits: a corrugated carton is hundreds of times the mass of the tape sealing it, and the carton recycles the same whether the tape is on or off, because paper mills screen out tape and labels in pulping. If your brand needs the tape to recycle too, choose paper tape and accept the dispenser and the cost. If what you need is a strong seal, a sharp logo and a low cost per box, BOPP is the practical answer, and it is what the overwhelming majority of e-commerce parcels are sealed with today.
